The Craft of Seeing: DVD Delivery Packaging

In this profession, every detail matters. From branding to social media presence, it is often the small details that matter just as much as the service and image quality we provide. One such detail is how to package and deliver the client’s images.

When I first started photographing, clients were given a DVD in a simple slim jewel case with wonderful sharpie handwriting that I delicately tried not to smudge since I’m a lefty. Starting in 2011, wedding couples received their DVDs in an image wrapped dual DVD cases that I would design in Adobe InDesign and order through Mpixpro.

Now I’ve decided to try something new. A packaging that I feel is clean and simple, and handmade. After spending hours on Etsy looking for ideas, I came across hand-stitched DVD cloth cases made by Rosella. Then I ordered in bulk solid white cases from Amazon just to provide a little more durability. These accompanied with a handwritten thank you note is what the client receives.

If I continue delivery through DVDs, then I’ll start incorporating image or logo printing onto the DVDs or a custom made label. However, I feel moving towards custom designed flash drives or electronic download will become more convenient and gradually the common delivery methods clients will prefer. Some clients are already opting for these options, but for the time, DVD remains the primary delivery method.
